EMT-Basic Refresher Course Information - West Coast Region

What are the requirements for EMT-Basic recertification in the state of California?
EMT's are required to take 24 hours of continuing education units every two years and retest their skills every two years. Students will need to complete the EMSA skills sign-off form when recertifying. For all current information regarding this topic, please visit the California EMSA website at www.emsa.ca.gov

What is the EMSA skills sign-off form and who can approve it?
This form was created by the State EMS Authority as part of the new regulations that went into effect in October 2005. There is a place for authorized instructors to sign-off on each of the skills in the EMT-Basic scope of practice, as verification that the candidate has been tested on the skills in front of an instructor. The ONLY individuals allowed to initial successful completion of skills testing on this form after the student has successfully demonstrated their capabilities in a scheduled EMT-Basic Refresher course are those approved by the local EMS agency (Sierra Sac Valley). For all current information regarding this topic, please visit the California EMSA website at www.emsa.ca.gov

If I am currently a paramedic student, can I use the hours in the didactic phase of training to supplement the required continuing educations units need to recertify?
All NCTI paramedic students are eligible to receive continuing education units, depending on their current status in the program. Students can contact the Educational Assistant at their school to obtain a letter documenting the number of continuing education units they are eligible to receive. However, paramedic school does meet the criterion necessary for skills testing. Students will need to register in the fourth day of the NCTI EMT-Basic Refresher course in order to complete this portion of recertification (including the EMSA skills sign-off sheet) once they have obtained their continuing education units. For all current information regarding this topic, please visit the California EMSA website at www.emsa.ca.gov

What does the EMT-Basic Refresher course consist of and how often is it taught at NCTI?
The EMT-Basic Refresher is a four day course. The first three days will provide students with 32 hours of continuing educations units, broken down into 8 units per day. The fourth day will be designated for testing. Currently, this course is scheduled to take place approximately every three months. Please check our website for current schedule of classes. For all current information regarding this topic, please visit the California EMSA website at www.emsa.ca.gov

Do I have to sign up for all three days of the EMT-Basic Refresher course?
Students can sign up for as little as one day and up to all three days of this course. Prices and dates of classes can be found in the "List of Classes" link on the homepage of our website. For all current information regarding this topic, please visit the California EMSA website at www.emsa.ca.gov.

Will I be able to recertify my Basic Life Support (CPR) card in this class?

Students will need to register in a separate BLS Refresher course in order to fulfill this recertification.
