AMR has approximately 19,000 employees nationwide. NCTI is the largest paramedic and EMS training institute in The United States.

History
NCTI came in to existence in 1988 in Sacramento, California, after the need was identified for an EMS training resources in the Sacramento Valley. A coalition of private ambulance services initially funded the start-up, which began as a partnership with a local community college. Over the years, as the demand grew and EMS agency and college district boundaries were drawn and re-drawn, NCTI began to operate independently.

Local EMS protocols established the need for paramedics responding to 911 emergency calls in the Sacramento area, yet there were none to be found. The local system had evolved along the rural EMS model, reliant upon the intermediate level of “Limited Advanced Life Support (LALS) provided by EMT-II’s.

Prior to this time, advanced life support had been provided by EMT II personnel, and no schools were offering paramedic education. Lawson Stuart was selected to work with local community colleges to establish partnerships that would jointly fund paramedic training: In the end, budget constraints at the time precluded the districts from participation in the joint venture. The solution became apparent, and NCTI was formed as a private institution. In 1988, housed in the back room of Foothill Ambulance Company in Citrus Heights, CA National College of Technical Instruction (NCTI) was born. The first goals were to provide the immediate personnel needed for the 911 contract with the County of Sacramento (Foothill Ambulance had a response area that included Orangevale, Citrus Heights, and portions of Sacramento)

Today, NCTI is nationally accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), formerly known as the Joint Review Commission (JRC) of the American Medical Association and has grown into the largest paramedic training institution in the United States.
